Onlangs speelde Il Sussurro  een nieuw werk van de jonge componist Rob Manthey. Het stuk ‘music go for at rush to’, voltooid in de herfst van 2010, heeft hij speciaal voor dit ensemble geschreven. In dit stuk mengt hij de klank van traverso en clavichord met computergeluiden

Een aantal vragen aan de componist:

• Waarom heb je speciaal voor deze combinatie van instrumenten een stuk geschreven?

Er waren twee redenen. Het startpunt was mijn vriendschap met Amanda en Gerard. Ik heb ze vaak horen spelen in verschillende ruimtes – huisconcerten, musea en andere gelegenheden, en ik raakte geïnteresseerd omdat deze oude instrumenten toon- en kleurkwaliteiten hebben die ontbreken bij moderne instrumenten. Dit feit fascineert me als componist.

• Wat was je inspiratie, met name de computer partij?

Wat betreft de computer partij is misschien nodig te beschrijven wat de computer doet. Het is eigenlijk een muziekinstrument geschreven in software. De geluiden die geproduceerd worden vallen in de categorie ‘ruis’. Er is een serie vormen, iedere vorm wordt vervolgens gefilterd, verlaagd of verhoogd om zodoende een grotere verscheidenheid aan geluidsmogelijkheden te creëren.

• Hoe past de computer bij de andere twee instrumenten, zo anders en zoveel ouder?

Mijn ervaring van barokke ornamentatie, in de muziek en architectuur heb ik vertaald naar de software voor de computer. De geluiden die dit ‘software
instrument’ voortbrengt zie ik als een vorm van ornamentatie, die verwijst naar vroegere ideeën over detail en decoratie.

• Wat kun je ons over de titel vertellen – ‘music go peach for at rush to’?

De titel is op dezelfde manier als de muziek ontstaan: ik neem vertrouwde elementen en zoek naar nieuwe manieren om ze te gebruiken en tot interessante resultaten te komen.

‘music go for at rush to’ ging in première op 6 februari 2011, tijdens een concert in Museum Geelvinck. Musici, componist en publiek waren allen enthousiast over het resultaat. Il Sussurro is van plan meer eigentijdse muziek in haar programmering op te nemen.

Exceptional Music for an Unusual Combination

Il Sussurro recently performed a new work by composer Rob Manthey. Written in the fall of 2010 specifically for this ensemble, “music go peach for at rush to” mixes the sounds of the traverso and clavichord with those of the computer.

Here are a few questions we asked the composer:

• Why did you write for this combination of instruments?

I wrote for this combination of instruments for 2 reasons. You and Gerard are my friends so that started it really. But then also hearing the instruments themselves in various settings, museum concerts, house concerts, got me very interested because these older instruments have tone and color qualities that the modern instruments do not. That’s a very fascinating idea for a composer.

• What inspired you for the piece, especially the computer part?

Concerning the computer part, perhaps a description of what exactly the computer part does is first necessary. It is basically a musical instrument written in software. The sounds it makes fall into the category of sound known as noise. There are a series of shapes, and then each shape is further filtered or raise or lowered to create a larger series of possible sounds.

The following question to be addressed would be “how does this instrument fit in with the other two, which are older and much different?” My answer has to do with my impression of Baroque ornamentation, but also Baroque architectural details. I view the sounds that the software instrument makes as a sort of decoration that for my ears refers back to earlier ideas of detail and decoration.

• Could you tell us about the title – “music go peach for at rush to”?

The title I have made in the same way I made the music: by taking familiar materials and searching for a new way to use them for interesting results.

“music go peach for at rush to” was premiered at the Museum Geelvinck on February 6, 2011. Musicians, composer, and audience members were all enthusiastic about the result, and Il Sussurro now plans to incorporate more modern pieces in their programming.

Gerard van Vuuren is geboren in Suriname, hij verhuisde op zevenjarige leeftijd met zijn familie naar Nederland. Vanaf zijn negende jaar kreeg hij pianoles, en zette zijn pianostudie voort aan het Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam. Tijdens lessen muziekgeschiedenis raakte hij meer en meer geïnteresseerd in barokmuziek. Hij besloot dan ook over te stappen naar het clavecimbel. Jacques Ogg werd zijn leraar, en hij studeerde in 1992 af aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium te Den Haag. Met vier medestudenten richtte Gerard de groep ‘The Beggar’s Banquet’ op. Ze speelden in Nederland (Jong Netwerk Oude Muziek), Engeland, Duitsland en Polen.

Gerard treedt regelmatig op met verschillende ensembles en koren, solistisch en als continuo-speler. Hij was een aantal zomers repetitor op het Internationale Barokmuziekfestival in Mateus (Portugal), en nam deel aan concerten in Noord-Portugal, samen met o.a. Jacques Ogg en Wilbert Hazelzet. Sinds een aantal jaren speelt hij ook clavichord, gestimuleerd door de mogelijkheden van dit instrument, en ziet zijn muzikale horizon verbreden.

Sinds het moment dat ze als kind betoverd werd door het pure, bijna menselijke geluid van de fluit, heeft Amanda Markwick van deze fascinatie haar eigen realiteit gemaakt door het bespelen van historische fluiten. Hiervoor ontving zij lovende kritieken, zoals “prachtig vloeiende kleurrijke tonen” en “je hebt een gouden geluid”. Op haar zoektocht naar culturele en muzikale verfijning behaalde Amanda haar Bachelors en haar Masters diploma eerst aan de Indiana University van Bloomington, Indiana (VS), en vervolgens aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. Dankbaar voor de zorgvuldige begeleiding van haar leraren Barbara Kallaur, Kate Clark, Wilbert Hazelzet en Barthold Kuijken is Amanda inmiddels een veelgevraagd kamermusicus en orkestlid geworden, en treedt regelmatig op in de Verenigde Staten en Europa.

‘Le tic douloureux ‘- zonderlinge muziek voor een ongewone combinatie- Met werken van (o.a.) de broers Wilhelm Friedemann en Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Charles Delusse (±1720-±1774) en een nieuw werk van de jonge componist Rob Manthey, speciaal voor het ensemble geschreven.

Napoleon’s Playlist-  Als Napoleon de iPod had gekend, welke muziek zou hij hebben downgeload?! In het kader van de Napoleon-tentoonstelling in het Honig Breethuis hebben we een programma samengesteld met muziek van componisten die hij erg waardeerde. Muziek die hij mogelijk gehoord heeft in de operahuizen in Parijs, in de salons van Malmaison en misschien zelfs in het Paleis op de Dam in Amsterdam.

Il Sussurro speelt voornamelijk  muziek uit de late 18e eeuw, maar we zijn zeker ook geïnteresseerd in de muziek uit de gehele Barok en Klassieke periode. De mogelijkheden van het clavichord als kamermuziekinstrument zijn we langzaam aan het ontdekken. De combinatie met traverso is ideaal, maar in historische verhandelingen lees je ook over de combinatie met viola d’amore, en met zang. Experimenten met luit en gamba staan ook op de agenda. Music of WF and CPE Bach- Because of its dynamic sensitivities, the clavichord was one of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s preferred instruments. In this program, we present the highly emotional and expressive music of CPE and also his brother Wilhelm Friedemann. You will hear the clavichord in many roles – as a soloist, as an obbligato partner, and as basso continuo.

Le clavicorde en France – The lush keyboard music of 18^th century French composers works particularly well for the clavichord. We perform music by Boismortier, Le Roux, Rameau, and also two of Marie Antoinette’s music teachers: Gretry and Dussek.

Practicing with Haydn and Mozart – Both of these great composers of the classical era owned clavichords: the Mozart family traveled with a clavichord made by Johann Andreas Stein, and Haydn used a clavichord at the Esterházy court. The music of each composer is given new life when performed on this instrument. This program presents solo keyboard works by each composer, as well as arrangements of Mozart’s violin sonatas for traverso.

Napoleon’s Playlist - If Napoleon had used an iPod, which  music would he have downloaded?  In connection with the Napoleon exhibition at the Honig Breethuis in 2011, we have created a program with music of composers that Napoleon really liked.  We have included music that he probably heard at the opera houses in Paris, in the salons of Malmaison, and maybe even at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam.

Il Sussurro plays primarily music of the late 18th century, but we are interested in exploring the music of the entire Baroque and Classical periods. We are also intrigued by the potential of the clavichord to partner with other instruments. The combination of traverso and clavichord is ideal, yet historical treatises also reference clavichords playing with viola d’amore and voice. We are also planning experiments with lute and viola da gamba. Please check back soon for the resulting programming ideas!
